Primed: ECU Masters of Applied Arts Graduate Exhibition

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

“Not only is this an historic occasion because it is the first graduating class at the Masters level from Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, but the show itself reflects the diversity of the work that makes up the new Masters of Applied Arts degree. The combination of art, design and media is a potent one in an age that is beginning to recognize the importance of the creative and cultural industries not only to the economy but also to the emotional and mental well being of society as a whole.”

- Dr. Ron Burnett

2008 marked Emily Carr’s inaugural graduate student exhibition for the Master of Applied Arts Program. The Graduate Exhibition took place May 1-11 at the ECU Studios, located at 1535 West 3rd Avenue.

Convergence: an Emily Carr Institute Masters of Applied Arts Exhibition

Monday, May 7th, 2007

“Emily Carr Institute’s unique new graduate program is a sign of the new cultural economy—and the way the school is changing with it.”
- The Georgia Straight

Last fall, 14 artists and designers were selected to study in the inaugural year of the Masters of Applied Arts Program at the Emily Carr Institute. The school, an 82-year-old mainstay at the helm of the Vancouver artscape, received 92 applicants for the first seats in the class. It is the first and only multidisciplinary program of its kind in Canada. Next month, the program concludes its first of two years with Convergence.

A mesh of media arts, design, and visual arts, the show represents the spirit of a new generation of artists. Their diverse talents and numerous achievements as working, internationally-recognized artists, shatter the ivory towers of prototypical grad school environments.

The kaleidoscope of influences celebrated by the Masters of Applied Arts program will come together in Convergence, the first public showing of the student’s new works. The conceptual diversity of the exhibition reflects the innovation of its artists working in a variety of media. Incorporating principles of design, visual arts, and media arts, Convergence vocalizes the distinct visions of 14 artists and designers, each gathering together at the forefront of new artistic frontiers.

Exhibition Participants: Ross Birdwise, Jaime Barrett, James Chutter, Jason Dasilva, Hélène Day Fraser, Katrin Eythorsdottir, Jay Gazley, Sarah Hay, David Humphrey, Kathryn Mussallem, Bo Myers, Vytas Narusevicius, Dasha Novak, Nate Winkel
